Die Geschichte begann am 24. Dezember des Jahres 1955. Ein Kind hatte eine Werbeanzeige von Sears entdeckt, auf der die Rufnummer des Weihnachtsmanns abgedruckt war. Leider ist es dabei aber zu einem Zahlendreher gekommen und so landete der Anruf nicht im Vorzimmer des Nikolaus, sondern bei Oberst Harry Shoup, dem Operationsleiter am Continental Air Defense Command Operations Center in Colorado Springs. Nein, Santa sei nicht zu sprechen, sagte dieser. Aber er könne ja mal nachschauen, wo er sich gerade aufhalte. Shoup wies seine Mitarbeiter an, das Radar nach einer roten Zipfelmütze abzusuchen, die sich vom Nordpol entfernte. Die Information gab der Soldat dann an das Kind weiter. An dem Abend rissen die Anrufe nicht mehr ab… Daraus ist mittlerweile Tradition geworden, seit 54 Jahren sucht die heute als NORAD bezeichnete Militärbasis den Himmel nach Spuren des Weihnachtsmannes ab und Kinder auf der ganzen Welt haben nach wie vor die Möglichkeit, sich nach dem aktuellen Aufenthaltsort des dicken Mannes zu erkundigen. Lazy loader delays loading of images in (long) pages. Images below the fold (far down in the page) wont be loaded before user scrolls down. This is opposite of image preloading. Using lazy load on long pages containing heavy image content makes page feels snappier. Browser is in ready state after loading visible images. No need to wait for unknown amount of pictures to load.

This idea occurred to me a few years ago when I was toying with building my own “MATRIX” camera-bar out of inexpensive digital cameras and a computer-sequencing relay-set. I never got around to building the camera-bar, but I finally did get around to experimenting with “flyaround” images. The appeal of these images, to me, is that the idea of combining “fine art” with animated .GIFs. After all, animated .GIFs have been a source of much evil on the Internet. With the sheer number of idiotic dancing pig animated .GIFs that annoy us on amateurish websites - well - someone has a pretty serious karmic debt to pay off. When I signed up on deviantart.com and they had no upper limit on image size, I thought I’d do my part to creatively retrieve the animated .GIF from the depths to which it has sunk.
