WordPress Optimization Guide | GTmetrix

Overview

Many of our users run WordPress either as a CMS or blog platform. With a lot of great plugins available, it’s easy to create a full-featured website with a lot of neat functionality. These plugins however, can insert additional CSS and JavaScript files into your header which can hurt your site’s performance (and Page Speed and YSlow scores).

We’ve listed some plugins and written some recommendations for our WordPress users seeking optimization help.

U-Design WordPress Theme
U-Design is a very powerful theme which suits both, users with no programming background as well as advanced developers. It will help you build your site in no time to your liking with minimal effort. It empowers you to set any color to elements such as backgrounds, links, text, menu links, etc. You can completely change the look and feel of your site in seconds. You can also choose from over 200 fonts, including Google Font Directory and Cufón fonts. This number will grow with time since many new fonts are being added to the Google fonts library. The theme also features 6 (six) Home page sliders for you to choose from.
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) has been made a priority when designing the U-Design theme. In the code hierarchy, the main content block is placed before the sidebar regardless of the sidebar position, so it is crawled first by search engines. Another very powerful SEO feature has been implemented regarding Heading (h1, h2, h3,…) tags in that on the Home page the ‘h1’ tag is assigned to the site name and the rest of pages/posts/archives etc., the main Title has been assigned an ‘h1’ tag.

2011 was a great year for WordPress, with some excellent new updates that saw the introduction of a drag-and-drop uploader, distraction-free writing, the HTML5 Twenty Eleven theme, and movement towards a fully responsive dashboard. As well as changes to WordPress core, theme development continued to evolve, as whispers of responsive design spread like wildfire across the WordPress community.

At Theme Trust, we’ve just released our first WordPress theme of 2012, and we’re quite proud of it. This one is called Uber, and it’s a responsive business and portfolio theme perfect for freelance designers, photographers, or design firms. The portfolio section in this theme, with its smooth filtering animations, is a great way to showcase your work. Another great feature is the animated full screen background that’s synchronized with the home page slideshow. Keep reading to learn more Uber’s features and to try out the demo.

Headway 3 Now Available | Headway Drag and Drop WordPress Theme

Headway’s always been about working on your design visually. Headway was the first visual drag and drop commercial theme framework for WordPress. The Visual Editor changed the game by letting you design live right on the page. No more “let’s check a bunch of options sight unseen and hope it looks good” like other themes. The Visual Editor is still there, but in Headway 3 we’re introducing a whole new way to create the page layouts: the Headway Layout Grid. The Layout Grid lets you DRAW your website, just by clicking and dragging. You draw a Block (yeah, they’re Blocks now, not “Leafs” anymore—and you’re so welcome!) and then choose what kind of Block you want it to be. If you change your mind you can change the Block type. No need to delete and redraw the Block. Blocks can be dragged around and resized. Each Block has options you can set such as content filters or to give it a custom CSS class.

Nova is a sharp, simplistic design that makes for an intuitive user experience. Nova’s biggest strength is its homepage, which allows you to organize your content into two areas. The Featured Slider is perhaps the most versatile slider we have built, and comes with multiple slider variations that breath new life into the design. (via Nova WordPress Theme | Elegant Themes)

May the best Wordpress plugins win in | the Battle of the Plugins

Why

The following sentence is directed to everyone involved in the creation of websites: WordPress is awesome.

If you agree, then you probably also know that WordPress is not only awesome because of it’s core system, but also because it can be easily extended with numerous plugins.

Currently over 16 thousand plugins are available in the WordPress repository; in itself an insane number if you think of the amount of hours that were spend in their combined creation. And as someone once stated:  ”with this high amount of available plugins comes great confusion”: Which plugin is best for what? How do I know which one is best? Can I trust the internal WordPress rating system?

To solve these problems this website is created.

What

Even though the Battle of the Plugins is a peaceful place for humans and animals, it is not for WordPress plugins. Ohh no. It is here where they fight to survive and to become the best of the best.

In order to survive they will have to be voted on. The plugins with the most votes will automatically be displayed on top and is considered to be the best plugin in a battle.

Let the battle begin!
